Perimeter® Wire – Free Wifi Dog Fence

  1. The idea behind this product is great. Performance has been satisfactory, but I live in a very rural area and probably don’t have the interference problems that others might encounter. I did have to shorten the range because at maximum range, the base would sometimes lose connection with the collar my dog could get through the invisible fence. The shortened range still gives him plenty of room to run around and it definitely has taught him to stay on the property. I first had the collar set on “beep” only (no shock) and trained him with a leash to run away from the boundary when the beep sounded. After that I let him out on his own and progressively increased the correction level over the next week until he learned what was expected.

It’s seems that the performance suffers greatly when the collar battery gets low. I suspect that is a major contributor to the poor reviews. I find that I need to swap the rechargeable battery out almost everyday for good performance. It comes with 2 batteries, but the base will charge 2 at a time, so it might be a good idea to buy an extra battery.

My favorite feature of this is the ability to take it with you. My family and I have a travel trailer and the Perimeter dog fence is the perfect way to keep our dog within our campsite area. I plug the base into an outlet on my travel trailer and set the desired range on the collar. Couldn’t be easier.

This product will not operate located inside my home. The only way to get it to work was to locate it outside(under overhangs). With that, I can only obtain approx. 210 degree coverage. The balance was open for the dog to go as he pleases. I was going to put up a second one, outside as the other to cover the unguarded. This was not successful. This units dog collar would not stay connected to the new SmartStation(maybe 2 minutes) nor could I get the new dog collar to pair with my first SmartStation. It would only pair with the unit it came with. There is no way after two units would I ever recommend this system.

My first one star rating for any product or service I have reviewed online. In other reviews I typically provide a list of Pros and Cons – hoping to provide an objective guide post for people reading the review. In this case there is only one Pro (hence no list) and a series of Cons so long that I will list the top three.

    Pros:

    1) Straightforward and easy set-up: The directions were easy to follow and I had the batteries charged (6 hours), unit placed and boundary set with relative ease.

Cons (remember only top 3 listed for brevity):

    1) Does not work: I set the boundary at ~60 feet (per the set-up instructions). It only worked for about a 10 foot swath in my front yard. As I walked the ~60 foot boundary it started to fail almost immediately – by fail I mean failed to beep to alert me that the boundary was being or would be breached shortly.

    2) The collar beep was delayed: Even in the 10 foot area where it worked the beep from the collar would initiate a couple of seconds too late. Hence, the dog would have been possibly exposed to correction when he was not outside the boundary.

    3) LCD accuracy: The LCD panel is programmed to provide real-time distance updates so you will have an idea of where your dog is without looking outside or calling for him. We tested this and it did not work (not even within a 10% error margin as discussed on the company’s web site). This was going to be a nice feature, but again the product failed.

Hope this helps convince you to look elsewhere for a dog containment system.

I didn’t listen to the other reviews and bought this product anyway. Had dead spots in yard where it had to go through a lot of walls. Collar would alarm one time in one spot and the next time may be 15′ further or closer. One spot in the yard i could walk 100 ft past the boundary (set at 90ft) and never get an alarm then it would alarm as i walked back to house at many different points. Some times once alarm sounded i would have to walk 40 ft or more towards unit before alarm would stop. Several spots would not alarm at all. Even where i had a good signal if i would run away from unit i could get out of reach and it would never pick me up (too slow picking up location). This product would be great if it worked. I think they sent it to market before they had the kinks worked out or they had too much invested in it, couldn’t get the kinks worked out, and tried to sell it anyway.

If you live in a small hut in the middle of a field with no trees this product would be great.

We also have tried repeatedly to make this work using many different locations. We called the company several times and they all say that there is interference so there are places that it will not cover. The Station goes off even when the collar is next to it. The receiver is not accurate so that in one spot where we set the perimeter one day it will go off 10 ft before the flag. The next time it will not go off until 25ft past the flag. Also, once it goes off and the dog moves back inside the perimeter it continues to beep and our dog gets shocked. We found that any metal, gutters, window trim, garage doors, cars, interferes with this system. The only way we could get it to work was to set it out side which you can’t do. Don’t buy this system. After several months we finally gave up and we are now stuck with a useless $300.00 piece of junk.
